Biography



Paul Crouse is an independent photographer based in Kyoto, Japan.

Born and raised in Michigan, Paul graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied Journalism and worked as a photographer and managing editor of The Daily Cardinal student newspaper. He then worked for seven years as a staff photographer for The Grand Rapids Press newspaper in Michigan. There he covered a broad range of photo assignments including breaking news, human interest features, sports and studio illustrations. He also covered freelance photo assignments for a variety of media and corporate clients, including: The Associated Press, The Chicago Tribune, The Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, The Milwaukee Journal, The Washington Post and many others.

 

Seeking a change of life, Paul moved to Kyoto in 1995 where he has been a resident ever since. In 2001, he decided to pick up the camera and spent the next year creating a portfolio and perfecting his skills. In 2002, he created TotemPhoto, a location photography business specializing in portrait and event photography.

He lives with his wife Shino near the old Imperial Palace in Kyoto.
